On the topic of Louisa May Alcott (because of her birthday thing tomorrow going around thingy):
I just watched Little Women (1994) again over Christmas break, and I just loved it. All over. Again.
It turns up the proto-feminism that Alcott probably had to tone down, although …
… it still puts Jo and Prof. Bhaer together in the end.
And I know that’s seen as this rather paternalistic end to Jo’s independence …
… but NGL. In the movie, where Prof. Bhaer is played by Gabriel Byrne, I totally ship it.
Like. Sorry to the legions of Jo/Laurie shippers, but I totally don’t see Gabriel Byrne circa 1994 as any kind of poor substitute for Christian Bale. Dude could get it with me ANY. TIME.
(But then TBH I never mourned the loss of Jo/Laurie all that much in the book either, I thought it was a bittersweet “Life’s funny like that” thing … Plus I cared ever so much more about Jo and Amy’s relationship than Jo and Laurie’s, it IS called Little WOMEN Y/N? W/e, I like the 1994 adaptation better than not only other movie adaptations but better than the book itself. COME AT ME.)
AGREED! SO MUCH!
